Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts has secured planning permission for its new multimillion-pound home in south London.
The drama school, currently based in Wood Green in north London, will relocate to Peckham from 2018, as the school moves into a new facility, equipped with its first on-site theatre.
The premises, which will bring all of Mountview’s teaching on to one site, will feature a 200-seat performance space and an 80-seat studio, alongside 22 teaching studios, music practice rooms, two TV studios and a radio suite.
It is also planned that the building will be open to the public, with rehearsal space for hire as well as performance classes for young people and adults.
The school confirmed that Southwark Council had unanimously approved the plans, in a meeting on September 28.
Announcing the decision on its website, a statement said: “Our vision is to create a new model of drama school through which we will become the leading academy in excellence, social access and innovation in training for the creative industries.”
The site will be home to Mountview’s 400 students, and is anticipated to open in September 2018, following a period of construction that will begin next year.
Southwark Council cabinet member Mark Williams described Mountview as “one of the best musical theatre and performance arts schools in the country” and added: “Peckham’s reputation for creativity and culture has continued to grow and we want to encourage and support this as much as possible, which is why we are delighted to be working with Mountview to bring them to Southwark.”
Announcing the plans earlier this year, Mountview chair Vikki Heywood said the “truly innovative” new space would enable to school’s “local, national and international students to excel”.
